How to Make Ginger Powder

Ginger is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory that cannot be missed at home, especially in times of flu. Its cultivation, although of long cycle, can be done easily in pots or in the garden. Making ginger powder is also a simple process that everyone can do, so that it can be consumed and stored for longer.  As usual, what is done at home has no comparison with what is bought at the supermarket, so it is really worth cultivating and storing your own ginger to take care of yourself in a more natural way. There are several ways to process and dry ginger. In this post we will show you how we do it, step by step.

  1. After picking (or buying) the ginger, wash the rhizomes.
  2. Cut into very thin slices.
  3. Place the slices on baking paper on a baking tray, without overlapping them.
  4. Bake at 90ºC for at least 2 hours. The temperature must be low, because the purpose is to dry the rhizomes and not to cook them. The drying time is also variable according to the oven efficiency. If you live in a hot country, you can leave the ginger slices to dry outdoors for about 3 days. It is advisable to cover the ginger with a net so that it is protected from attack by animals and at the same time it receives light. The slices have to be very dry and easy to break.
  5. Place the dehydrated slices in a coffee grinder or food processor and grind to powder.
  6. Sieve into a container. It may be necessary to repeat the grinding and sieving process if there are still lumps in the middle of the powder.
  7. The powder should be stored in an airtight container to protect from humidity. Under these conditions ginger powder can be stored for up to 6 months.

This way you get ginger powder that can immediately be used in cooking or to make tea and other drinks that help strengthen the immune system, such as golden milk to which you can add a teaspoon of this wonderful powder.

Take a look at our video and see how we do it in a practical way!
